Gallia Academy stings Hornets, 9-1

COAL GROVE, Ohio — No need to stress this one.

The Gallia Academy baseball team — which claimed a narrow 8-7 victory over Coal Grove, on April 16 in Centenary — earned the season sweep of the Hornets on Monday, as the Ohio Valley Conference leading Blue Devils rolled to a 9-1 win, in Lawrence County.

After a scoreless opening inning, GAHS (12-7, 9-2 OVC) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, when Jeremy Brumfield, Ryan Terry and John Stout each scored after taking free passes. The Blue Devils added three more runs in the top of the fourth frame, as Kole Carter, Matt Bailey and Anthony Sipple each scored.

The Gallia Academy advantage grew to 9-0 in the top of the sixth, when Bailey, Sipple and Eric Ward each crossed home plate. Coal Grove (4-8, 2-8) scored its only run of the evening in the bottom of the sixth, and GAHS took the 9-1 victory.

Gallia Academy senior Marcus Moore — who tossed a complete game and struck out four batters — was the winning pitcher of record, allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk.

Chase McKnight suffered the pitching loss for Coal Grove, allowing six runs, four earned, on four hits and five walks, in 3.1 innings. Dylan Malone pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief and he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits and one walk. Malone struck out four batters in the setback, while McKnight fanned three.

Sipple led the Blue and White at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, two RBI and one stolen base. Bailey was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI and one stolen base, Carter was 2-for-5 with one run scored, one RBI and one stolen base, while Ryan Terry doubled once, scored once and drove in one run.

Ward singled once, scored once and stole one base for the guests, Ty Howell added a single, while Brumfield scored once and stole one base. Stout finished with one run scored in the win, while Braden Simms added one RBI and Cole Davis picked up one stole base.

Darren Bloomfield led the hosts with two singles, followed by Jacob Clark with one single and one run scored. Daniel Rutherford singled once and stole one base for CGHS, while Jeb Jones had one RBI.

The Blue Devils committed one error and left 10 runners on base in the game, while the Hornets had four errors and six runners left on base.

The Blue and White are schedule to return to action on Wednesday, when Chesapeake visits Centenary.
