RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Harry Reilly scored the University of Rio Grande’s first goal and assisted on its final three scores as the RedStorm posted a 4-0 win over Brescia University, Saturday night, in River States Conference men’s soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The fifth-ranked RedStorm improved to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the RSC with the win, extending its regular season unbeaten streak to 24 straight games.
Brescia, which remained winless in five all-time meetings with Rio Grande, slipped to 5-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play with the loss.
Rio enjoyed a substantial 34-5 advantage in shots overall and a 12-3 edge in shots on frame, although the goals didn’t come as frequently as they had in the RedStorm’s five previous outings – a stretch which produced a trio of matches with 10 or more scores.
Reilly, a senior from Coventry, England, gave head coach Scott Morrissey’s squad what proved to be the only goal it would need when he capped a breakaway up the right side of the field by blistering a shot past Brescia goal keeper Jacob Stanley with 18:47 left in the first half.
The lead grew to 2-0 when senior Mitchell Osmond (Sydney, Australia) headed in a corner kick by Reilly just under 4-1/2 minutes later and that’s how things stayed until a pair of goals late in the second half to set the final score.
Freshman Manyumow Achol (Wellington, New Zealand) also scored on a header from a Reilly corner kick with 11:43 remaining in the contest, while senior Eduardo Zurita (Sant Boi de Llobregat, Spain) netted a goal off of a pass from Reilly with just over one minute left.
Junior Richard Dearle (Castle Donington, England) stopped three shots in goal for Rio Grande.
Stanley finished with eight saves in a losing cause for the Bearcats.
Rio Grande returns to action on Thursday, hosting West Virginia University Tech in a battle of RSC unbeaten.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Randy Payton is the Sports Information Director at the University of Rio Grande.
