WAVERLY, Ohio — The end result was the same, but at least the score was not.

Host Waverly claimed a season sweep, but the Gallia Academy tennis team had some effort rewarded the second time around following a 4-1 setback Wednesday night in a non-conference match in Pike County.

The visiting Blue Devils (4-7) dropped a 5-0 decision — which included a pair of three-set losses — during the first matchup with the Tigers in Centenary back on April 13.

The second go-round also provided a pair of three-set thrillers, including the third singles match that came out in the Blue and White’s favor.

Sophomore Kirsten Hesson dropped a 4-6 decision in the opening set against Patrick Cupple, but then rallied to claim a 7-5 win in the second set.

With the third set tied at six, Hesson outlasted Cupple en route to a 10-5 decision in the tiebreaker — wrapping up the Devils’ lone victory. Cupple defeated Hesson in the previous contest at GAHS by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 count.

Brandon Nibert also needed three sets, again, to beat Gallia Academy senior Pierce Wilcoxon following a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 outcome in first singles. Junior Katie Carpenter fell 6-0, 6-1 to Colton Lambert in third singles as well.

The junior-sophomore duo of Thomas Hamilton and Amane Sawamoto dropped a love and love decision to Chase Downing and Ryan Dunn in first doubles.

Freshman Nick Mayes and junior Brittany Masters also fell 6-0, 6-0 in second doubles to Alex Workman and Brayden Stutz.

The Blue Devils traveled to Jackson Thursday and will host Logan on Friday night. GAHS completes its regular season next week with trips to Ironton and Chillicothe on Monday and Wednesday, with a home match against Point Pleasant sqeezed in between.
