Point Pleasant bitten by Lady Bulldogs, 57-39

THE PLAINS, Ohio — One team was going to get their first win, unfortunately for the Lady Knights it just wasn’t them.

The Point Pleasant girls basketball team dropped a 57-39 decision to non-conference host Athens, which picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon in McAfee Gymnasium.

The Lady Knights (0-3) trailed by just four points, 17-13, at the end of the first quarter, but Athens (1-2) outscored its guest by a 15-to-5 count in the second stanza to make the margin 32-18 at halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 47-29 by the end of the third quarter, outscoring PPHS by a 15-11 clip. Both teams scored 10 points over the final eight minutes, as AHS sealed the 57-39 victory.

For the game, Point Pleasant shot 16-of-53 (30.2 percent) from the field, including 3-of-7 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Bulldogs were 18-of-55 (32.7 percent) from the field, including 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from three-point range. From the charity stripe, the Lady Knights shot 4-of-11 (36.4 percent), while Athens shot 15-of-26 (57.7 percent).

The guests won the rebounding battle by a 42-41 edge, but committed 31 turnovers, 10 more than the hosts. The Red, Black and White also earned advantages of 11-8 in steals and 4-2 in blocked shots, while Athens claimed an 8-6 assists edge.

The Lady Knights were led by Peyton Campbell, who hit two three-pointers, six two pointers and one free throw on her way to 19 points. Lanea Cochran was next with eight points and a game-best 14 rebounds. Hannah Smith scored four points for the guests, Allison Henderson and Kelly Marr both added three, while Morgan Miller contributed two points.

Campbell, Henderson and Miller recorded two assists apiece for Point Pleasant, Miller and Smith both had four steals, while Cochran rejected a pair of shots.

Laura Manderick led the hosts with 22 points, a dozen of which came from beyond the arc. Emma Harter poured in 10 points for the victors, Mindi Gregory added eight, while Kylee Stewart scored six. Lilly Mills marked five points for the Lady Bulldogs, Belle Tan chipped in with four, while Emmarld Francois and Kyleigh Heller had two points apiece.

Stewart and Tan pulled in six rebounds apiece to lead the hosts, while Harter, Manderick and Gregory had two assists each. Manderick also led the Green and Gold defense with two blocks and two steals.

Point Pleasant and Athens won’t meet again this season. PPHS returns to action Wednesday at Hurricane.
