RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The University of Rio Grande opened up big leads in all three sets and cruised to a 25-15, 25-16, 25-9 win over Cincinnati Christian University, Tuesday night, in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball action at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The RedStorm improved to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in league play with the win, taking sole possession of sixth place in the KIAC standings in the process.
The Eagles slipped to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the KIAC with the loss.
Rio Grande finished the match with just six attack errors and its .417 hitting percentage was its second-highest single-match mark of the season.
CCU finished with just a .089 attack percentage.
Rio spotted the Eagles the first two points of the opening set before reeling off eight straight winners and never trailing again.
Set two was a bit more of a back-and-forth affair until the RedStorm scored 11 of the final 14 points to win going away, while Rio dominated set three by scoring the first three winners and leading by as many as 16 points.
Senior Alex Phillips (Orient, OH) enjoyed her best overall performance of the season in the win, tallying a match-high 11 kills and six blocks. Junior Kayla Briley (Marion, OH) added 27 assists, three blocks and a pair service aces.
Junior Chandler Brown (Stockdale, OH) had a match-best 16 digs for the RedStorm.
Lindsey Clements had eight kills and two blocks in the loss for Cincinnati Christian, while Ellie Abel had 12 assists and Mallory Morris tallied seven digs.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a tri match at Appalachian Bible College in Beckley, W.Va. The RedStorm will face Christendom (Va.) College at 2 p.m. and host Appalachian Bible at 6 p.m.
