WATERFORD, Ohio — Had the contest’s second half not been shortened, then the Rebels’ long night would have been even longer.

That’s because visiting South Gallia got rolled by the Waterford Wildcats 56-8 on Friday night in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division football matchup.

The Wildcats, in fact, scored the opening 56 points through the first 34 minutes and 30 seconds —as the Rebels averted the shutout with three minutes remaining.

South Gallia got its lone points on a 9-yard touchdown run by Gavin Bevan and a two-point conversion run by Wyatt Rapp.

The Wildcats, which are the defending TVC Hocking Division champions, won their 14 consecutive league affair.

Waterford erupted for 22 points in the opening quarter, followed by 25 more in the second, then added nine points in the third frame which included a safety.

The second half was shortened to two eight-minute quarters —along with the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s running clock rule in effect.

With the loss, South Gallia fell to 2-5 — and 1-4 in the TVC Hocking.

The Rebels had won five straight over Waterford before last year, as they also dropped their fourth straight road game.

The Wildcats have now won 10 of their last 11 at home, and raised their record to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the league.

Braden Bellville had four rushing touchdowns for Waterford, scoring on runs of 32, two and 10 yards in the first half and finally on a 14-yard sprint with a minute-and-a-half left in the third quarter.

He also caught an 84-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Peyten Stephens, which gave the Wildcats all the points they needed for the win by the 8:37 mark of the opening period.

Stephens, only 48 seconds in, opened the scoring barrage by completing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Noah Huffman.

Bellville, with his 32-yard scamper with 4:52 left in the first quarter, made it 22-0 with the Stephens two-point conversion run and the rout was on.

Stephens then scored on a two-yard plunge of his own, making it 34-0 midway through the second stanza.

The Wildcats went up 47-0 at halftime on a 17-yard run by Joe Zimmer.

Zach Casada kicked two extra points, following the 10-yard run by Bellville in the second and the 14-yard run by Bellville in the third.

Team and individual statistics were not available.

The Rebels return to TVC Hocking Division action next Friday night — when they welcome Wahama.
