ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio — What a difference a few days make.
The Meigs volleyball team defeated visiting River Valley 3-1 to take the season series in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division match-up on Thursday night in Meigs County. The Lady Raiders (4-13, 1-6) captured the first set, but the Lady Marauders (4-14, 3-6) came back and took the match in consecutive games.
The Maroon and Gold started off Game 1 strong off the serve of Devyn Oliver to go up 5-0. The Silver and Black fought back with six points from Courtney Smith to give River Valley the lead and the Lady Raiders maintained the lead to win the first set 25-17.
Meigs began the second game with a 4-0 run. Smith’s seven points helped River Valley to regain the lead 8-6. Both teams traded the lead until the Lady Marauders began a 8-3 run. Smith helped River Valley to get back within four points, but junior Alliyah Pullins sealed the set with a 24-19 win.
Meigs and River Valley traded serving duties for much of Game 3. The Lady Marauders took the third game 25-18 thanks to the combined efforts of Pullins and Devin Humphreys. Meigs carried its positive momentum to the fourth set by starting the game with a 5-0 run. The Lady Raiders tried to recover, but the Maroon and Gold wouldn’t be denied. Meigs took Game 4 25-15.
Oliver led MHS with 15 service points, followed by Pullins and Kassidy Betzing with 10 points each. Allie Hanstine got six points, while Devin Humphreys had five points and Morgan Lodwick earned four points for the Lady Marauders.
“The girls wanted to win tonight for Homecoming week and they pulled it off,” Meigs coach Lori Carter said. “We had one little setback, but they came through and we got a home win.”
Smith led the Lady Raiders with 20 service points. Angel Toler earned seven points, followed by Jessi Steele with six points. Alex Truance got five points, while Ashley Gilmore and Jacey Walter got two points a piece.
“Our hitting was the problem today,” River Valley coach Denise Toler said. “It was unfortunate to see that many hitting errors. Every point that they got came on our hitting error. Our coverage was pretty good and we were reading the tips better than we have been, but we gotta work on hitting.
Meigs also defeated River Valley in their last meeting 3-1 on Sept. 10 in Bidwell.
