Rio volleyball closes road swing with win

OAKLAND, Calif. — The University of Rio Grande closed out a three-game weekend road trip to the West Coast with a dominating straight sets win over West Coast Baptist College, Saturday afternoon, as part of the Mills College Invitational.

The RedStorm improved their season mark to 3-10 with a 25-8, 25-13, 25-18 victory over the Eagles, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Head coach Billina Donaldson’s squad tallied a season-best .248 attack percentage (35 kills-10 errors,-101 attacks) in the victory, while WCBC had just 14 kills as a team in the match.

Senior Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) had a match-best 14 kills to lead Rio, while sophomore Katie Hemsley (Jackson, OH) had 21 digs and freshman Carly Shriver (Gallipolis, OH) tallied 17 assists in the win.

The RedStorm also received 10 assists from freshman Ryanne Stoffel (Englewood, OH) and six blocks – three solos and three assists – from freshman Macy Roell (Farmersville, OH).

Tiffany Cashman had six kills and three blocks to lead West Coast Baptist in a losing cause, while Hannah DeLeon had 18 digs and Valerie Cole finished with 11 assists.

Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night when Kentucky Christian University visits the Newt Oliver Arena for a 7 p.m. first serve.
