RACINE, Ohio — If nothing else, the Lady Tornadoes’ night got better as it progressed.
The Southern volleyball team fell to non-conference guest Nelsonville-York in straight games, by scores of 25-9, 25-17 and 25-20, on Wednesday night in Meigs County.
The Lady Buckeyes led wire-to-wire in the 25-9 first game, allowing Southern (1-2) to record just three service points in the opener.
The Lady Tornadoes bounced back, jumping out to a 9-5 lead in the second game. However, Nelsonville-York reeled off eight straight points and led 13-9. SHS tied the game at 15, but failed to regain the advantage, as NYHS claimed 10 of the next 12 points and won the game by 25-17 count.
After a pair of lead changes in the third game, the teams were tied at 16, the 10th and final time they were tied. Nelsonville-York scored the next seven points and went on to take the game by a 25-20 margin.
The Lady Tornado service attack was led by sophomore Phoenix Cleland with six points, including one ace. SHS seniors Jane Roush and Jaiden Roberts both recorded five service points, with Roush earning one ace. Baylee Grueser and Paige VanMeter posted two points apiece, with an ace by Grueser.
SHS sophomore Baylee Wolfe led the Purple and Gold at the net with seven kills. Jolisha Ervin was next with three kills, followed by VanMeter, Sydney Cleland and Kassie Barton with two kills apiece.
Phoenix Cleland had one kill and a team-best two blocks, Roush finished with one kill and a team-high 14 digs, while Abby Cummins chipped in with a block.
The Lady Buckeyes and Lady Tornadoes aren’t scheduled to meet again this fall. After hosting South Gallia on Thursday, Southern will be back in action on Tuesday, at Belpre.
