WILLIAMSPORT, Ohio — For the young Gallia Academy Blue Angels, this “tie” sure had to feel like a really good road win.
That’s because the Blue Angels, as part of Monday’s annual Westfall Invitational at Crown Hill Golf Club, placed third in the six-team event —and recorded a school-record team score for nine holes.
The Blue Angels are actually only in year two of playing as a full golf team.
Gallia Academy and host Westfall were tied at 207, and the Blue Angels ultimately ended up third as the result of the fifth-score tiebreaker.
Avery Minton shot a 57 for Gallia Academy’s fifth score, while the Mustangs’ fifth and final card was in fact a 74.
The top four scores counted towards the team total, as only the Blue Angels and team champion Teays Valley featured a full field of six.
Teays Valley’s victory was by 22 strokes over Logan, 176-198, followed by the 207 apiece from the Blue Angels and Mustangs.
Logan Elm edged out Madison Plains by two shots (218-220) for fifth, as Logan, Logan Elm and Westfall fielded five golfers apiece — while Madison Plains performed with the minimum four.
The Blue Angels’ top returnee from last season, junior Molly Fitzwater, and freshman Ryelee Sipple shot a 49 apiece to lead the way.
A pair of newcomers, sophomore Bailey Meadows and junior Hunter Copley, chipped in a 54 and 55 respectively for the other two counting scores.
In addition to the 57 from Minton, Macy Jones had a 65.
For the Mustangs, they were paced by match medalist Ella Seely with a 38, but their next three scores were a 45, 55 and 69.
Westfall was actually third in the district last season.
Logan’s Lexis Fickel and Teays Valley’s Brooke DeVold both fired a 42 for the co-medalist runner-up, as all four counting scores for the Vikings were at 45 or lower.
All six shot 52 or better.
