Mason County will once again be busy Wednesday as three diamond teams are slated for tournament action.
Starting in softball, top-seeded Winfield defeated third-seeded Poca on Tuesday night in the loser’s bracket final — setting up a Class AA Region 4, Section 1 championship game against Point Pleasant at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Winfield High School.
The Lady Knights — the two seed — are still unbeaten in postseason play and need only one more win to secure their 12th consecutive regional appearance. PPHS defeated Winfield by a 3-1 margin in a completed game Monday, which means that WHS has to win two straight from Point to secure a regional berth.
On the flip side of the Class AA Region 4, Section 1 tournament, the fifth-seeded Point Pleasant baseball team will try to extend its season by another day when it travels to third-seeded Nitro at 6 p.m. Wednesday in a loser’s bracket opening round contest.
The Big Blacks will have to win five consecutive games to advance to the program’s fourth straight regional tournament, starting with Wednesday’s event.
Two-time defending Class A champion Wahama also return to action on Wednesday as the third-seeded White Falcons travel to top-seeded Ravenswood for a winner’s bracket final starting at 5 p.m. The winner of that Region 4, Section 1 bout will have at least two days off while the rest of the loser’s bracket thins itself out over that span.
Hannan was originally scheduled to play a Class A Region 4, Section 2 baseball contest on Wednesday, but the Wildcats do not yet have an opponent in the loser’s bracket due to inclement weather at other venues.
Also, just for note, the Class A Region 4 track and field meet will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday on the campus of Parkersburg High School. Both Wahama and Hannan will be competing at that event.
