GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — Sometimes a lead can disappear right in front of your eyes.
Ohio Valley Christian soccer team surrendered two goals in a six minute span Tuesday night, taking the Defenders 2-1 lead and turning it into a 3-2 Fairland victory, in Gallia County.
The Dragons were on the scoreboard just five minutes into play, as Alex Naegele scored an unassisted goal. The Defenders (1-3-2) tied the game on a Justin Beaver penalty kick, and the teams remained deadlocked at halftime.
In the 51st minute of the game, OVCS senior Justin Sizemore broke free from the Fairland defense and found the back of the net to give the Defenders a 2-1 advantage.
The Dragons tied the game in the 62nd minute, as Naegele scored after a FHS corner kick. Just six minutes later, Naegele completed his hat trick and gave Fairland a 3-2 lead. The Defenders failed to answer back and the Dragons claimed the 3-2 victory.
Ohio Valley Christian senior goalkeeper Marshall Hood recorded 13 saves, while Alex Wood stopped 10 shots for Fairland. Both teams finished with seven corner kicks, but the Dragons head a 16-to-13 advantage in shots on goal.
The Defenders — who face Fairland in a rematch on September 29, in Proctorville — return to action on Thursday when they visit Cross Lanes.
