South Gallia competes at VC meet

McARTHUR, Ohio — Just like David, the little school did some damage.

The South Gallia track and field programs enjoyed some successes on Tuesday as the Rebels finished third and the Lady Rebels were fifth at the 2017 Vinton County Open Meet held on the campus of VCHS.

The SGHS boys scored 62 total points and earned 10 top-six efforts at the six-team event, which also included seven top-three finishes and a pair of individual championships.

The Rebels finished behind only Athens (206.5) and Unioto (134) in the final team standings, but the Red and Gold did fare better than host VCHS (52), Wellston (22.5) and Athens B (20) on the boys side.

Colton Bowers won the discus title with a throw of 109 feet, 10 inches. Johnny Sheets captured the shot put crown (38-7) and also placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 1.5 inches.

Kyle Northup was second in the high jump with a leap of 5-6, while Bryceton Folden was the 3200m runner-up with a time of 12:34.5.

Justin Butler was third in the 110m hurdles (19.4) and also placed fifth in the 300m hurdles (52.1) event. Jeffery Sheets was fourth in the shot put with an even toss of 36 feet.

The 4x100m relay team of Folden, both Sheets and Jacob Bircher finished third with a time of 50 seconds even. Butler, Northup, Tristan Janey and Elijah Warner also combined for third place in the 4x800m relay with a mark of 10:19.7.

The Lady Rebels finished fifth — ahead of only Wellston (7) — on the girls side with 14 points and came away with five top-six finishes overall.

Athens won the girls competition with 245 points, with Unioto (114), Vinton County (89) and Athens B (24) rounding out the top four spots.

Jessica Luther had the best SGHS finish after placing third in the 3200m run with a mark of 14:14.8. Olivia Harrison was fifth in the 300m hurdles (1:03.2) and sixth in the 100m hurdles (24.2), while Jaslyn Bowers was sixth in the high jump with a cleared height of 4 feet, 4 inches.

The 4x200m relay team of Harrison, Autumn Norris, Katie Bowling and Alyssa Cremeans also placed fourth with a time of 2:11.7.
