RSC recognizes Rio’s Petty
FLORENCE, Ky. – University of Rio Grande junior Tyanna Petty is the River States Conference Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week March 20-26 after her performance at the University of Tennessee’s RustBuster Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
A native of Somerset, Ohio, Petty competed in the high jump at the meet and placed first of 22 entries. She did so with a leap of 1.70 meters.
Petty bested a field that included 14 NCAA Division I athletes en route to hitting the “A” qualifying standard for NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Petty is coming of an indoor season in which was the NAIA indoor national champion in the high jump.
Rio Grande has its next meet March 31-April 1 at the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, N.C.
Rio’s Jones earns second straight honor from RSC
FLORENCE, Ky. – University of Rio Grande senior Jenna Jones threw a pair of one-hitters last week and thus was named River States Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for March 20-26.
League officials made the announcement late Monday while the RedStorm were in the process of an 8-7, 10-inning win over the University of Northwestern Ohio.
Jones, from Lancaster, Ohio, shut out Ohio Christian in a 6-0 victory to start her week. She racked up six strikeouts, two walks and gave up just the one hit in seven innings. She then limited Cincinnati Christian to one hit in a 10-2 victory, which was shortened to five innings due to the run rule. Neither of the runs by CCU was earned.
Jones is 5-3 with a 1.97 ERA and two saves in 13 outings (eight starts) entering Monday’s game. Opponents are hitting just .180 off of Jones, who has strung together in her last four starts a two-hitter, a no-hitter and two one-hitters.
Rio Grande (20-6, 4-0 RSC) is ranked No. 24 in the NAIA Softball Top 25 and has its next games April 1 against Brescia University at Marshall University’s Dot Hicks Field in Huntington, W.Va.
