Fall signups under way for Rio Soccer Academy

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The Rio Soccer Academy will host its fall soccer signups on Thursday, Sept. 3 and Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 6-8 p.m. each night, at the Lyne Center on the University of Rio Grande campus.

There are four age groups – Under 6, for children born Aug. 1, 2010 and younger; Under 8, for children born Aug. 1, 2008 and younger; Under 10, for children born Aug. 1, 2006 and younger; and Under 11, for children born Aug. 1, 2004 and younger.

Cost is $40 for Under 6 and $50 for Under 8. The U-6 and U-8 divisions will will have a 6-7 week season, with 8-10 practice sessions and six playing contests, all of which will take place on the Rio campus.

Prices for the Under 10 and Under 11 division have yet to be determined.

The goals of the Academy are to provide a challenging, skill-appropriate training environment, which allows for proper technical and tactical development to create well-rounded soccer athletes who are capable of competing at a high standard.

Dickerson grabs weekly KIAC honor

FLORENCE, Ky. — Melissa Dickerson of the University of Rio Grande earned the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honor for her efforts Aug. 24-30, the conference announced on Monday.

A 5-foot-2 senior midfielder from Little Hocking, Ohio, Dickerson picked up a goal and an assist in the RedStorm’s 2-1 victory over Milligan (Tenn.) on Saturday.

Dickerson gave Rio Grande a 1-0 lead after 12 minutes and then assisted on the winning goal, which was by Courtney Young with three minutes remaining. The win was the RedStorm’s first of the year.

Rio Grande is now 2-1 overall, 1-0 KIAC after Monday night’s 3-2, KIAC win over WVU Tech.

Dickerson entered Monday’s game with three points on the year. She and Rio Grande resume action Sunday at Davenport (Mich.).

Rio’s Paulino, Martinez honored by KIAC

FLORENCE, Ky. — University of Rio Grande forward Willian Paulino and goal keeper Ben Martinez were named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games played Aug. 24-30.

The conference office made the announcement late Monday night.

Paulino, a 5-11 junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, led a prolific week of offense for the RedStorm, posting two goals, four assists and eight points in two games for NAIA No. 5-ranked Rio Grande (3-0). He tallied two goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-0 win over St. Xavier (Ill.) on Friday night.

He followed that up with four assists in a 10-1 victory over St. Francis (Ind.) on Sunday, giving him four goals, four assists and 12 points in just three games thus far this year.

Martinez, a 6-0 native of Montpellier, France, gave up just one goal in two games during the week. He is 3-0 in net this season.

Martinez opened last week with a shutout win over St. Xavier (Ill.) on Friday, his second such performance in as many outings at the time. He followed that up with just one goal allowed in his 90 minutes of a 10-1 win over St. Francis (Ind.) on Sunday.

Martinez has played all 270 minutes in goal for the RedStorm, and has a goals-against average of 0.333.

Rio Grande will host its RedStorm Soccer Classic, which will include No. 8 Vanguard (Calif.), receiving-votes Point Park (Pa.) and Westmont (Calif.) this weekend. Rio Grande will face Westmont on Sept. 4 and No. 8 Vanguard on Sept. 5.
