Quick start fuels Rio women

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The University of Rio Grande women’s basketball team bolted to a 22-point halftime lead and cruised to a 69-53 win over Interamericana University, Tuesday morning, in the Puerto Rico Clasico at Mario Morales Coliseum.

Eleven different players scored for the RedStorm, which improved to 8-6 with a third consecutive victory.

Rio hit six of its seven three-point goals in the opening half, jumping to a 29-12 lead after one quarter and a 42-20 advantage at the intermission.

Interamericana shot just under 61 percent from the floor in the second half and twice sliced the deficit to 13 points in the third quarter, but couldn’t get any closer.

Senior Sharday Baines (East Cleveland, OH) was Rio’s lone double-digit scorer and finished with 15 points. She also had a game-high five steals and a team-best three assists.

Senior Brooke Marcum (Vinton, OH) and junior Alexis Payne (Deep Water, WV) both had seven rebounds for the RedStorm.

Deyeneira Velez had a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Tigeresas in the loss, while Gladyshka Gerena tallied 17 points and handed out a game-best four assists.

Interamericana actually outshot Rio for the game (45.8%-40.9%), but committed six more turnovers than the RedStorm (19-13) and was outrebounded 43-28, including 17-2 on the offensive glass.

Rio Grande plays its final game in the event – and closes out its schedule for the calendar year 2016 – on Wednesday afternoon, taking on Universidad del Este.

Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. EST.
