GA golfers win Portsmouth Invitational

McDERMOTT, Ohio — Definitely in a league of their own.

The Gallia Academy golf team recorded four of the 11 sub-80 rounds posted Thursday at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club, which ultimately allowed the Blue Devils to claim a 32-stroke over the field at the 2015 Portsmouth Invitational held in Scioto County.

GAHS had two of the 16 teams in the event, with the ‘A’ team cruising to solid tally of 305 over 18 holes. West Union ‘A’ was the overall runner-up with a 337, while Logan Elm (339), Zane Trace (341 and Portsmouth (344) rounded out the top five team scores.

The Gallia Academy ‘B’ squad placed ninth overall with a 362, while River Valley was 15th out of 16 teams with a 413. Mitchell McFarland of Wheelersburg won medalist honors with a 2-under par effort of 70, while Dares Hamid was just one shot back to earn runner-up honors.

Hamid paced the winning Blue Devil squad, while Zach Graham and Marcus Moore respectively followed with efforts of 77 and 78. Taae Hamid rounded out the winning tally with a 79, while Josh Davis also posted an 86 for the victors.

Jeremy Brumfield paced the Gallia Academy ‘B’ team with an 85, followed by Kaden Thomas with 90 and John Stout with 92. Miles Cornwell rounded out the team score with a 95, while Nick Denbow also recorded a round of 111.

Logan Sheets paced the Raiders with a 77, followed by Grant Gilmore with a 101 and Cliff Chapman with a 114. Chance Gillman rounded out the team tally with an effort of 121.

Gallia County accounted for almost half of the sub-80 rounds at the event, joining McFarland, Dylan Smith (77) and Seth Follis (77) of Logan Elm, Caleb Arnold (74) of Zane Trace, Derek Lemley (77) of Chesapeake, and Jordan Tieman (73) of Portsmouth West.
