POMEROY — The September 16th meeting of the Return Jonathan Meigs Daughters of the American Revolution was held at the Meigs County Public Library in Pomeroy, Ohio.
The meeting was presided by Regent Karen Werry, and the DAR rituals were recited by the members, and the Star Spangled Banner sung, accompanied on piano by Donna Jenkins.
A business meeting followed, with some of the things discussed being the collecting milkweed pods this fall to plant seeds for conservation for keeping the Monarch butterflies from becoming extinct, as well as recognizing the week as Constitution week, noting that member Gina Tillis’ class at school have been learning facts of the origin of it. Also member, Linda Russell read a reading about the celebration of the Constitution.
The DAR Schools were reported to be doing well by member, Mary Rose. The Christian Waldsmith House tours will be Oct. 21st from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Oct. 22, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Dec. 2 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Membership dues for DAR are being collected at this time for the following year. It was noted that by-laws need to be updated.
Sunshine Report and Flag Facts were noted by member, Opal Grueser. All members are encouraged to clip coupons to be sent to an Air Base for the military.
Jenny Ridenour, from Meigs Soil and Water, was presented recently with a certificate for her work with Conservation, in helping children learn about it.
The business meeting adjourned and the guest speaker, Rebecca Underhill, of the Southeast Region District, was introduced. She presented a very interesting program on seven veterans who served in the Revolution, telling of the enlistment age and the area of the country from which they enlisted.
She also suggested that the chapter donate Christmas Cards to Project Patriotic, with the insides being blank, containing envelopes, and stamps also. This will give our chapter points. She encouraged us also, to write a short story about ourselves, family, or work, and submit it as a Women’s Issue Contest, and the deadline for submitting it is Feb. 15, 2018. Underhill, also noted that the Southeastern District is responsible for the Spring District Meeting this year.
Meeting closed and refreshments were served. Next meeting is Oct. 21 to clean around the George Washington Marker on State Route 124 near Long Bottom.
