Blue Angels outlast Chillicothe, 53-46 in OT

CENTENARY, Ohio — The Blue Angels are playing their best at the right time.

The Gallia Academy girls basketball team has now won three straight games after defeating Southeastern Ohio Athletic League guest Chillicothe 52-46 in Gallia County Saturday.

The Lady Cavs (6-14, 2-7 SEOAL) took the early 8-to-6 lead over Gallia Academy (8-14, 4-6) after a slow paced first period. Both teams scored 10 points in the second period and Chillicothe held a 18-16 lead at halftime.

After the break CHS added one to its lead, out scoring GAHS 16-to-15 in the third period. The Blue Angels rallied back with a 15-to-12 run in the fourth period to tie the game at 46. The Blue Angels defense cracked down in the overtime and they held Chillicothe scoreless. GAHS scored six in the extra period and took the 52-46 victory.

Micah Curfman and Chelsy Slone each scored 20 points to lead GAHS, while Kendra Barnes scored 10. Abby Wiseman rounded out the Gallia Academy scoring with two points in the triumph.

Slone rounded out the double-double with 12 rebounds, while Curfman grabbed five. Curfman had team-highs in assists with four and steals with four. Hannah Loveday had a pair of blocks for GAHS.

As a team the Blue Angels had 31 rebounds, 10 assists, 13 steals and two blocks. GAHS committed 20 turnovers and 17 fouls. Halley Barnes was the lone Blue Angel to foul out. Gallia Academy shot 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) from the free throw line and 13-of-42 (31 percent) from the field, including 3-of-8 (37.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Curfman made a pair of GAHS triples, while Slone and Kendra Barnes each accounted for one.

The Lady Cavs were led by Lett with 13 points and Large with nine, followed by Jordan and Holton with seven each.

Chillicothe shot 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from the free throw line, while committing 26 fouls in the game.
