According to a 911 dispatcher, emergency units responded after receiving calls for assistance from residents in the Reedsville area. No report about injuries or the extent of the damage to property in the area was immediately available.
At 7:40 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service in Charleston, W.Va., issued a tornado warning for an area that included Meigs and Athens counties as well as Jackson County, W.Va. The storm moved east into West Virginia where tornado warnings were issued for many counties along and east of I-77.
In Athens County, a tornado caused considerable damage to homes and mobile homes in Athens and York townships, destroyed the football stadium at Athens High School in The Plains, caused damage at Hocking College in Nelsonville and also caused damage to several businesses in the Athens area.
