The pool will be open from noon - 7 p.m., Saturday, May 29 and swimmers of all ages are welcome to take advantage of the free gift from the Village of Syracuse. This year the pool is open noon - 7 p.m., Monday - Saturday and 1-7 p.m. on Sunday. The pool extended its closing time from 5 to 7 p.m. to accommodate those who are busy or work during the day but would like to swim. Also, night swims, now called “Swimming Under the Stars” are also offered later from 8:30-10:30 p.m., Mondays and Tuesdays.
Admission has raised slightly this year but according to Pool Manager Wendy Egan, the pool will no longer be requiring swimmers take 15 minute breaks every hour which means swimmers will have extra time in the pool. This year’s daily admission rates are: children (ages one-18), $3; adults, $4; seniors, $3; non-swimmers, $1. Admission rates for “Swimming Under the Stars” are: $2 for swimmers; $1 for non-swimmers.
Also, new this year are punch cards used as multi-visit passes. Those who purchase these punch cards are free to share the care with anyone and each visit equals one punch. This means a swimmer can use a 10-visit card to bring 10 different people in at once, bring one person in 10 times or whatever combination the purchaser prefers. The multi-visit passes come in two varieties including one costing $27 which is for 10 visits or $115 which is for 50 visits.
Egan also said this year new items have been added to the concession stand including corn dogs and chocolate drizzled Rice Krispies treats along with some healthier choices like low-calorie popcorn and 100 percent apple juice boxes. Fountain drinks and snow cones will also be on the menu.
Starting Wednesday, June 6 and every Wednesday after, the shallow end of the pool will be reserved for “Children’s Fun Day” from 2-4 p.m. where children 12 and under can participate in water games conducted by a certified lifeguard and educational programs led by various community groups.
Swimming lessons are also being offered this year at London Pool by Greg McCall, a certified instructor with many years experience. McCall will provide swimming lessons for levels one-six from June 11-24. Lessons begin at 9 a.m. for levels three and up; levels one and two will start at 10 and 11 a.m. Starting on Saturday, call for more information or to sign up for lessons at 992-5418.
The pool is also available for special events and pool parties. Upcoming events include “Rockin’ Tea Party” from 8-11 p.m., June 18 for ages 13-19 with an admission charge of $5. Teens are invited to rock out at this event aimed especially at them. A DJ will be playing popular music and teens will have the whole pool to themselves.
Also planned is “Race on the River 2010” on Saturday, Aug. 28 with free admission from 1-4 p.m. provided by the race sponsors. This is the last leg of the triathlon benefiting the Southern Fitness Center. Meanwhile, the Syracuse Fire Department will be holding a chicken dinner at 11 a.m., and the Fifth Annual Back to School Ride for Kids will kick off at 1 p.m. in the pool’s parking lot that same day.
