RACINE — Tornadoes are needed for the second annual “Big Fooze Scholarship” Southern Alumni Basketball night on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Charles W. Hayman Gymnasium.

All proceeds from the event go to the Southern Alumni Association and the Hilton “Big Fooze” Wolfe, Jr., Scholarship Fund. Players wishing to participate should contact Junie Maynard via e-mail at Junie.Maynard@SouthernLocal.net or call Maynard at 949-4222, ext. 1129. Cheerleaders should contact Nikki Ihle Whobrey at whobzkidz2@gmail.com. To accommodate more players there will be two women’s games and three men’s games to assure more playing time.

The third and fourth grade students will be on hand to sing the National Anthem, while the first and second graders will sing the Southern fight song “Stand up and Cheer.” Students should report by 6 p.m. Festivities are slated to begin at 5 p.m. All girls’ players and cheerleaders should report to the gym by 4:30 p.m. and all boys’ players should report by 6 p.m. Most likely teams will be divided up by odd years versus even years in their respective age groups.

The Southern Band under the direction of Chad Dodson will also be on hand for the event, accompanying the students in their performances. Cheerleaders from the past are also invited to come out and support the teams. The games will once again be televised on WJOS TV 27 in Pomeroy with DVDs available for purchase. Players are asked to condition prior to the game date to avoid injuries. Games are slated to be at 5 p.m. for the women and 6:45 p.m. for the first men’s game. Cheerleaders will perform at 7 p.m.

Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for students. Participating players and cheerleaders will have an additional $3 registration, making a total $6 commitment to play or cheer. Organizers noted that if “you don’t pay, you don’t play.” Students singing or in the band will be admitted free with coupon.

To remain on cue and to avoid a late finish, all games will be running-clock with substitution times scheduled into the format. A 15-minute running clock per half will be used for the women and an 18-minute running clock per half for the men. The clock will stop for bonus or two-shot foul shots with under a minute to go in each half.

Schedule of events: 5 p.m., 1995 and-down women warm-up; 5:45 p.m., 1996-and-up women warm-up; 6:35-6:45 p.m., intermission; 6:45 p.m., cheerleaders perform, Stand-Up-and-Cheer Band and first and second graders perform the National Anthem; 7 p.m., 1985-and-down men warm-up; 8 p.m., 1986-1998 men warm-up; 9 p.m. 1998-2009 men warm-up.
