POMEROY — For nearly a half century, the Pomeroy-Middleport Lions Club has been posting flags of the United States of America along the streets of downtown Pomeroy in observance of patriotic holidays.

Yesterday in celebration of Columbus Day, several members were out early getting the flags in place.

It happens eight times a year beginning in February with Presidents’ Day and moving on to Memorial Day in May, Flag Day in June, Independence Day in July, Labor Day and Patriot’s Day in September, Columbus Day in October, and Veterans Day in November.

Merchants who want a flag placed in front of their business pay a small fee each year for having the Lions Club do it. The money is used by the Club for their special project of providing eyeglasses for those who cannot afford to pay for them.

Other club projects which contribute to the eyeglass project include placing gum ball machines in businesses, bringing in a Christmas variety show which is staged at the Meigs Middle School, and fund raising at a Meigs County Fair booth.
