POMEROY — Six candidates for Pomeroy Village Council and four candidates for Middleport Village Council will appear on the November general election ballot.

Democrat Victor C. Young III and Republican George F. Stewart, Jr., will advance to the general election after their unopposed nominations in Tuesday’s party primaries. Only the Village of Pomeroy had an election Tuesday.

Jim Sisson, Joseph Barnhart, William A. Barnhart, and Jackie R. Welker filed petitions with the board before Monday’s general election deadline for independent candidates. Four council members will be elected.

All candidates for council in Middleport will run as independents, and all are incumbent members of council there. H. Craig Wehrung, Martha Jean Craig, Mary Rae Moore and Sandra F. Brown will appear on the November general election ballot for the four council seats open.

Those Middleport council members said prior to the primary they would run as independents to save the village the cost of a primary election.

A spokesperson for the Board of Elections said the board was still calculating the cost of Pomeroy’s primary. That cost must be borne by the village, because Tuesday’s election was not a county-wide primary. It will be particularly expensive in that the proposed quarter-percent income tax increase on the ballot was soundly rejected.
