MIDDLEPORT — The Middleport police officer who shot a man following a chase out of Middleport is back at work and has filed seven criminal complaints against the man.
Steve Koebel filed charges of driving under the influence, driving under suspension, reckless operation, failure to display a valid license plate, two counts of failure to comply with a police officer and resisting arrest against James Gray.
One count of failure to comply is a fourth-degree felony; the other charges are misdemeanors.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation is now investigating the incident of a week ago. Sheriff Robert Beegle said Koebel initiated a routine traffic stop on Gray’s vehicle in Middleport early on April 15. When Gray refused to stop, Beegle said, Koebel followed him to the intersection of Ohio 7 and Union Avenue, where Gray wrecked his car.
Koebel told investigators he believed Gray was reaching for a firearm in his waistband as he got out of his car, and he fired two shots at Gray.
A court clerk said a warrant has been issued for Gray’s arrest.
Middleport Mayor Michael Gerlach confirmed Tuesday that Koebel was back at work for the village. Koebel was placed on paid administrative leave when investigation into the chase and shooting began, but Gerlach said Koebel is permitted to work the department’s dispatch desk and perform other clerical duties while the investigation is underway.
Beegle said yesterday it will be up to the BCI to recommend any criminal charges against Koebel to the county prosecutor.
