Having a sense of humor is a great personality trait, and I believe Kathy McDaniel was well blessed with that quality.

She writes the Southern Charge United Methodist Church newsletter and mails it out to several people, including me, and there’s always something there that makes me chuckle.

This week it was about a Sunday school teacher relating the story of Lot’s wife who looked back as she was leaving Sodom and Gomorrah and turned into a pillar of salt. One of the little boys in her class quickly replied that once his mommy looked back when she was leaving the supermarket, and she turned into a telephone pole.

For several years now, the Rock Springs Church has been having benefits for someone in the county who is having health problems and needs a helping hand.

This year’s benefit has been set for March 16 at Meigs High School, and the proceeds will be going to Jim Richmond.

While the fundraiser is sponsored by the church, many people in the community contribute to the cause by donating new and used items for the silent and live auctions and by attending the dinner which is held in the Meigs High School cafeteria.

Sally Hanstine and Jim Holman are the ones to be contacted by those who want to contribute in some way to this benefit.

If you love big band and dance music, as well as some swing and jazz, you won’t want to miss Matt James & The Ohio University Jazz Ensemble which will be coming to the Riverbend Arts Council in Middleport on March 16.

The Band has performed here several times over the years and has a large following. For the event refreshments are provided by local restaurants and delis. Tickets are on sale now at King Hardware in Middleport and Clarks Jewelry in Pomeroy. It’s a fun evening.

Everyone seems to have an opinion about the decision to discontinue Saturday mail, and it was surprising for me to read that in surveys taken, well over half think it’s fine if it saves money.

One woman told me it was okay with her because she didn’t have to go down to the mailbox on Saturdays any more. She seemed surprised when I told her the change hasn’t yet taken place and wouldn’t until fall and might not even then since the government is involved, and we’re never sure what action officials might take between now and then.

This is called Ohio’s Sweetest Season — Maple Sugaring.

While I suppose there are several producers in Meigs County, the only one I know of is George Morrison of the Chester community and he’s been tapping trees for many years.

Therefore, I can only tell you about the product from “George’s Sugar Shack.”

There’s just nothing better than waffles drowning in his maple syrup.

Now that Valentine’s Day has come and gone, let me report that my Christmas poinsettia is still looking lovely. I water it once a week and give it a quarter turn every day for the right light exposure.

Will it last ‘til Easter? We’ll see.
