POMEROY — Steve Musser of the Meigs Local Enrichment Foundation (MLEF) gave an update on the proposed athletic complex project to be constructed at Meigs High School at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Meigs Local Board of Education.

Musser presented the architect’s preliminary drawing of the proposed facilities. He suggested a cooperative effort of the Meigs Local School Board, the Band Boosters, the Athletic Boosters and the Meigs Local Enrichment Foundation principals in the preparation of a business plan “for optimizing use of the new facility as a revenue generator.”

He discussed financial aspects of the project, what money has already been raised, what pledges have been made, and what yet needs to be raised to move forward.

He also asked the Board to authorize the Foundation “to market a levy to fill the fundraising gap as well as provide needed funds for district asset purchases” and to draft “an agreement under which the MLEF would lease the property during construction.” The Board took no action on either proposal. Personnel matters handled at the meeting included awarding administrative contracts to Kristin Baer, a five year contract as principal at Meigs Primary School, and Susan Climer, a three year contract as assistant principal at Meigs High School.

Tom E. Cremeans was hired as the Meigs Middle School golf coach, Sheila E. Roush a a substitute personal assistant for the remainder of the school year to be used on an as-needed basis, and Samantha Shaffner, Gina Pines, Josh Ramey and Kellie Dawkins as substitute teachers to be used on an as-needed basis.

Approved as volunteer assistant coaches in sports effective this season were Vince Reiber and Mike Kloes, baseball, and Steven Wood, softball.

The resignations of Thomas Werry as auto mechanics teacher for the purpose of retirement, and Amy Lee as a special education teacher and Middle school basketball coach were accepted.

The recommendation of the Meigs Local School District Employees Insurance Committee for changes in the district’s schedule of benefits was explained to Board members by Superintendent William Buckley. He described the self-insurance program as a major expense to the district, and talked about some of the negotiated items and the schedule of benefits.

The Board acknowledged a $5,000 donation from the Milestone Benefits Agency, Inc. for the Meigs Local General Scholarship Fund.

Mark Rhonemus, treasurer/CFO, presented a resolution to the Board regarding accepting the amount and rates as determined by the County Budget Committee and authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the county auditor for fiscal year 2010. These all currently in existence include General, 3.80 mills (inside) and 16.20 mills (outside, voted millage), bond retirement levy 2.90 mills and the New Building Capital Maintenance Levy, .50 mills, both voted and in effect.

Rhonemus reported to the Board that the audit conducted by Caudill & Associates, CPA’s and released by the Auditor of State, showed that it was a “clean audit report.”

Attending the meeting were Buckley, Rhonemus, and Board members, Roger Abbott, Ron Logan, Barbara Musser, Larry Tucker, and Scott Walton, along with Mike Bartrum of the MLEF, several Meigs Elementary staff members and representatives of the Meigs Local certified and non-certified employee groups.
