COLUMBUS — The state has approved $50,000 through the Ohio Third Frontier for research and development at Ohio University.
In an announcement Tuesday, State Rep. Debbie Phillips (D-Albany) said that the funds had been approved in October by the Third Frontier Commission and this final approval by the State of Ohio means that the funding can now be released.
The funding will go to Ohio University’s Advanced Catalytic Material and Supercritical Reactor project which will study and validate a cost-effective treatment of waste water produced by shale gas wells.
“Finding cost effective ways to treat waste water produced by shale gas wells could provide an important alternative to the use of injection wells for disposal of flowback fluids from the stimulation of wells,” said Phillips. “Ohio University continues to serve as an important partner in the region, and this project is another good example of that partnership.”
The funding for this project will provide validation of the waste water treatment process developed at Ohio University.
