LOGAN, Ohio — Teays Valley, whose fifth-best score would have counted for everyone else in the field, claimed the inaugural Logan Invitational boys golf tournament championship Monday at the Brass Ring Golf Club.

The Vikings had a team score of 307 in the 18-hole event to easily hold off runner-up Lancaster Fisher Catholic (325), while host Logan (333) edged defending Southeastern Ohio Athletic League champion Gallipolis (334) for third place.

Rounding out the 10-team field were Sheridan (336), Logan Elm (352), Logan B (385), Nelsonville-York (393), Circleville (424) and Amanda-Clearcreek (428).

Five golfers played for each team, with the best four scores counting in the team total. Groveport, which only had two participants, did not record a team score.

Four Vikings (J.D. Davis 73, Jacob Braskett and Kyle Barnett 77 each, Cody Burley 80) shot 80 or under. The Vikings’ fifth-best score, Zach Mogan’s 84 — which did not count — would have been the first- or second-best score for six of the other nine teams.

Gallia Academy’s Rob Canady fired a one-over-par 36-36—72 to take medalist honors to edge Davis (37-36—73) by one stroke.

“The tournament went real well,” said new Logan coach Keith Myers, who organized the event along with club pro Brian Carney. “It ran smoothly and we had some really good golfers here today.”

When the scores were originally tallied, Logan and Gallipolis were tied for third place with scores of 333 and Gallipolis won the tiebreaker based on the score of the player who was not counted.

But a re-examination of the scores added one more stroke to a Gallipolis player, meaning the Chiefs finished ahead of their SEOAL counterparts… a major accomplishment indeed, considering the Blue Devils went undefeated last season until the state Division II tournament, where they finished third.

Logan’s top three players — Logan Holbrook (39-37—76), Tristan Myers (39-39—78) and Jake Barstow (40-40—80) — carded scores of 80 or less. Graham Keynes added 99 and Nick Wyrick 102 for the Purple & White.

The Chiefs suffered a major team blow late last week when senior and three-year letterman Jordan Fizer was badly injured in an accident at the Athens County Fair. Fizer will miss the remainder of the season.

“Our top three scores on the A team were very good and competitive with everyone in the tournament,” Myers said. “We have to get that four and five score lower, but from the B team we had two or three scores that will fit right in.

“Since we don’t have Jordan, the lineup is definitely going to change,” he added. Jordan’s freshman brother, Hunter, “came out on the B team and shot an 89 and played real well and Paul Duffy (93) shot well. We’ll have to look at scores and evaluate what it’s going to take for the next couple matches this week and see how we do in those.

“I told the guys that just because you have a bad round doesn’t mean you’re not in the lineup for two or three weeks. The lineup’s going to change.”

The Chiefs travel to the Portsmouth Invitational Thursday and to the Bloom-Carroll Invitational on Friday. The first nine holes of the Portsmouth match count in Southeastern Ohio Athletic League competition, which is the inaugural league match of the season.
