MIDDLEPORT — The Middleport Police Department and the Middleport Dairy Queen, owned by Wayne and Debbie Davis, will participate in a bike safety campaign, Police Chief Bruce Swift announced.
The campaign is sponsored by Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Mid-Ohio Dairy Queens and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The program will begin Memorial Day weekend and run through Labor Day weekend.
While on patrol, Middleport officers will be watching for children who are riding bicycles and are wearing a safety helmet and practicing safe riding. Examples of safe riding are riding with traffic, using appropriate hand signals and having bicycle reflectors.
Children seen wearing a helmet while riding will be given a coupon for a free small ice cream cone with the purchase of a small cone. Coupons can be redeemed at Dairy Queen, and the child must be accompanied by an adult.
Adults seen wearing a helmet can receive a coupon for a free 16-ounce Blizzard with the purchase of a 16-ounce Blizzard. Coupons will be valid until Dec. 31, 2012.
Also included on the coupon is a form to fill out an mail in for a chance to be one of 50 randomly drawn names to be invited to an end-of-summer event with the Blue Jackets.
