MIDDLEPORT — A three-percent increase in Middleport’s water rates went into effect on Thursday.
The rate hike will appear on January bills. Village Council approved the increase as an emergency measure on Dec. 22, so it would become effective at the first of the year.
According to the minutes of the meeting, the ordinance passed last month “will help water and sewer funds overcome the financial drain caused by inflation each year.” Inflation is now at 3.48 percent.
The increase will result in a 37-cent monthly increase for the minimum bill for 2,000 gallons. Without a “cost of living” increase in the rate schedule, the village will lose three percent of its water revenue each year, Village Administrator Faymon Roberts said.
Council also approved extending the contract with Rumpke Waste for 2009, for collection of residential refuse. The contract rate and customer rate will remain the same.
We have been paying an extra $5.00 for years for water "improvement" - Nothing has improved about our water.
Come on Council - who are you trying to fool? Where is the money really going?
The increases on the water bill are ridiculous!
If they need more money in the town, they should find another way to do it.
Over charging for water, and "refuge" is only going to last for so long, before someone starts doing something about it.
I lived in Middleport for 8 years. I paid over Fifty dollars a month then, I would hate to see what the bill would be now.
I am glad I was able to move! I am not Forced to pay these increases, that seem to come along every year.
I think the mayor, and council should look for other venues to raise money.
