POCA, W. Va. — After a five-year absence, Point Pleasant High School will have a representative in next week’s state golf tournament.
That’s because Bryce Tayengco, a junior for the Black Knights, has qualified for the Class AA state meet — following firing a 77 on Monday in the regional tournament at Scarlet Oaks Golf Club.
Tayengco was one of four Point Pleasant players to participate in Monday’s regional, of which the top two teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state meet.
Tayengco’s six-over-par 77 was actually tied for medalist runner-up honors at Scarlet Oaks, as he joins Ty Queen of Wayne as qualifying individuals — with Queen carding a 76.
Tayengco becomes the first Black Knight golfer to advance to the state tournament since Opie Lucas and Erik Albright both advanced in 2011.
Point Pleasant was also in Class AA that year, while having been a AAA program the past four.
As a team, Tayengco paced the Black Knights, which had a team total of 247 — and actually finished third as a team.
Doug Workman shot an 81, Matt Martin an 89 and Colby Martin a 91 for the other three Black Knight scores.
It was the final match for the senior co-captains Workman and Matt Martin.
Scott shot a 237 and host Poca posted a 241 to take the top two state spots.
All four of Scott’s scores were 86 or below, including a 77 by Ryan Butcher and a pair of 80s from Andrew Lester and John Price.
Clay Hale had an 86.
For Poca, Mitch Hoffman shared medalist honors with a 76, as Caleb Luikart clubbed a 79, Isaac Neal notched an 86, and Trent Covert carded a 93.
There were 11 total teams competing in the Class AA regional.
Tayengco takes part in the state tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 4-5) — at Oglebay Park in Wheeling.
