CENTENARY, Ohio — Finally, the Gallia Academy High School tennis team played a match — and finally the Blue Devils played a league contest.
After an 11-day layoff since their last outing, the Blue Devils — the three-time defending Southeastern Ohio Athletic League champions — clipped the visiting Logan Chieftains 3-2 on Tuesday in their SEOAL opener.
Gallia Academy is now 3-0 for the season, but last played two non-league matches March 30 and April 1.
The Blue Devils defeated Portsmouth Clay 3-2 and visiting Unioto 4-1 in those non-league tilts.
Since then, Gallia Academy’s road matches last week at Athens in the SEOAL — and at Valley and Ironton in non-league — were rained out.
On Tuesday, the Blue Devils captured two of the three singles matches, while also winning the first doubles bout.
Logan fell to 3-3 with the loss — and 0-2 in the SEOAL after also losing to Jackson 3-2.
Gallia Academy has now won 28 consecutive SEOAL matches.
The Blue Devils last lost in league play on April 23, 2012 — when Portsmouth beat them 3-2 en route to winning that season’s conference championship (2012).
All three singles matches against Logan were straight-set sweeps, with Gallia Academy’s Pierce Wilcoxon sweeping Nicholas Kudlapur at first singles 6-3, 6-1.
Wilcoxon’s sister, Adriana Wilcoxon, swept Logan’s Jeremiah Martin at third singles 6-3, 6-0.
Logan’s lone win in singles matches was at second singles — as Nathan Kudlapur swept Miles Cornwell 6-0, 6-1.
The Blue Devils split the two doubles matches, with the first doubles tandem securing the key contest win in three sets.
Dekota Metzler and Olivia Meadows rallied to top Logan’s Riley Kelch and Justin Vogt, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The Chiefs’ Jacob Peters and Colton Lonberger bested MiKayla Edelmann and Jenelle Stevens 7-5, 6-0.
The Blue Devils returned home, and returned to non-league action, on Wednesday with Wheelersburg.
Gallia Academy returns to the road, and travels to Jackson today, for another SEOAL duel.
