STEWART, Ohio — It’s a winning streak.
The Southern baseball team won its third straight game on Wednesday night, topping Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Federal Hocking by a 16-0 count, in Athens County.
Southern (3-6, 3-3 TVC Hocking) manufactured one run without the luxury of a hit in the opening inning, and then the Tornadoes broke the game open with six runs in the second frame.
The Purple and Gold combined one hit with two walks an one Federal Hocking (0-8, 0-6) error in the to score three times in the third inning, pushing the lead to 10-0.
Southern scored four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to cap off the 16-0 mercy rule victory.
SHS junior Blake Johnson earned the pitching victory, allowing one hit and five free passes in five shutout innings.
Devon Maxey took the loss for the Lancers, striking out 11, while surrendering 14 runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks in four innings of work.
Trey Pickens led the Purple and Gold at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one triple, one single and three runs scored. Dylan Smith and Logan Drummer were both 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Garrett Wolfe was 1-for-4 with one single and two runs scored.
Johnson and Billy Harmon both scored twice in the win, while Clayton Wood, Wesley Clark and Logan Dunn each scored once.
Dillon Wilfong had the lone hit for the Lancers, a single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Southern had three errors in the win, while Federal Hocking had five defensive mishaps.
These teams are scheduled to meet again on April 25, in Racine.
Southern resumes league play on Monday, when the Tornadoes host Miller.
