HEMLOCK — A long trip for such short work.
The Eastern High School softball squad made the lengthy trek to Perry County on Wednesday, but had no trouble in crushing the Miller Falcons 29-4 in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division makeup matchup.
The contest was originally scheduled for Monday, but was postponed to Wednesday due to rain and wet grounds.
The Eagles are now 2-0 — both overall and in the TVC-Hocking.
The Falcons are now 0-2 — both overall and in the league.
Eastern’s Emmalea Durst was the winning pitcher, as the contest was called following the fifth inning with the 10-run mercy rule.
She struck out 10 Falcons, including for all three outs in the second and fourth frames.
She retired the Falcon side 1-2-3 in innings two, four and five.
Offensively, the Eagles erupted for six runs in the first inning, then exploded for 14 runs in the second.
In the third, Eastern only scored one point, but it was a solo home run by Katlyn Barber — her second such of the game.
Durst helped her cause with a solo home run as well.
Eastern added two runs in the fourth, before finally scoring six runs in the fifth.
Miller managed a pair of runs in the first and fourth frames, sandwiched around two runs in the third.
Eastern hosts Waterford today (Friday) in another TVC-Hocking tilt, then travels to fellow undefeated Meigs for a non-league doubleheader on Saturday.
