BELPRE, Ohio — A great start can be all you need.
The Belpre boys basketball team allowed Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division guest Eastern to score just 13 points in the first half Tuesday night, and the host Golden Eagles held on for the 63-54 victory.
Eastern (3-13, 3-7 TVC Hocking) trailed 14-4 at the end of the opening stanza, and Belpre (8-8, 6-4) extended its lead to 31-13 at halftime. The Green and Gold outscored BHS 19-to-12 in the third quarter and 22-20 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough and the Orange and Black claimed the 63-54 triumph.
EHS junior Jett Facemyer led the Eagles with 18 points, followed by Dillon Swatzel with 10. Cameron Richmond scored seven points, Chase Curtis and Ross Keller each added six, while Corbett Catlett contributed five points to the Eastern cause. Austin Coleman rounded out the Eagle scoring with two points in the setback. EHS connected on three trifectas in the game and shot 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) from the charity stripe.
Deijon Bedgood paced the victors with 18 points, followed by Tavian Miller with 11. Nathan Mason and Mythius Houghton both scored eight points, Bailey Sprague marked seven, Ethan Williams posted six, while Brayden Longfellow finished with three points on the lone BHS trifecta. Ryan Simoniette rounded out the Golden Eagle offense with two points in the win. Belpre shot 18-of-36 from the free throw line, equaling 50 percent.
BHS also defeated the Eagles on December 8, by a 77-68 count, in double-overtime at ‘The Nest’. Eastern will try to get back on track Friday when they are scheduled to host Wahama. The White Falcons edged EHS by a 36-34 count on December 11, in Mason.
