CENTENARY, Ohio — What a way to start 2016.
In its first game of the new year, the Gallia Academy boys basketball team claimed a 54-46 victory over Ohio Valley Conference guest Coal Grove, Tuesday night in Gallia County.
The Blue Devils (4-3, 3-2 OVC) surged out to a 16-9 lead through eight minutes of play, but the Hornets (3-6, 1-4) cut the deficit to 28-22 at halftime.
Coal Grove outscored GAHS 17-to-10 in the third period, giving the guests a 39-38 lead with eight minutes to play. The Hornets sank just 2-of-8 free throw attempts in the final quarter, leaving the door open for the Blue and White. Gallia Academy answered by hitting 10-of-15 shots from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, which helped secure the 54-46 victory.
The Blue Devils were led by Wes Jarrell with 15 points, followed by Miles Cornwell with 13 and Devin Henry with nine. Justin Peck scored six points, Kole Carter added five, while Evan Wiseman and Justin McClelland rounded out the Gallia Academy scoring with four and two points respectively. For the game GAHS shot 18-of-25 from the free throw line, equaling 72 percent.
Coal Grove was led by Daniel Rutherford with 20 points and Sam Angelo with 12. Cole Gannon scored six points, Chase McKnight and Dalton Miller each added three, while Aaron Music rounded out the CGHS total with two points. For the game the Hornets sank just 9-of-22 free throws, equaling 40.9 percent.
Coal Grove defeated Gallia Academy in the Blue Devils’ season opener, by a 60-53 count in Lawrence County. GAHS improves to 3-0 on its home court this season, but the Blue and White will be tested on Friday night when three-time defending Southeastern Ohio Athletic League champion Warren visits Centenary.
