STEWART, Ohio — Good start, better finish.
The Meigs girls basketball team jumped out to a nine-point first quarter lead and never looked back Monday night en route to a 61-46 victory over host Federal Hocking in a non-conference contest in Athens County.
The visiting Lady Marauders (5-6) picked up their fourth win in five outings, thanks in large part to a 20-11 first quarter run. The Lady Lancers (1-11) countered with a 13-8 surge in the second canto to close the halftime deficit down to 28-24, then both teams traded a dozen points apiece in the third stanza for a 40-36 contest headed into the finale.
MHS, however, caught fire late and made a 21-10 charge over the final eight minutes — allowing the guests to sneak away with the 15-point triumph.
Meigs connected on 22-of-51 field goal attempts for 43 percent, including a 5-of-16 effort from three-point range for 31 percent. MHS committed 18 turnovers and also went 12-of-22 at the free throw line for 55 percent.
Madison Fields paced the Lady Marauders with 23 points, followed by Kassidy Betzing with 22 points and Alli Hatfield with 10 markers. Danielle Morris and Halley Barnes rounded out the winning tally with respective efforts of four and two points.
Federal Hocking claimed a 39-29 overall advantage on the glass, but Meigs recorded 17 steals off of 23 FHHS turnovers. Morris hauled in a team-best seven rebounds and Betzing added seven steals for the victors.
The Lady Lancers sank 15-of-48 shot attempts for 31 percent, including a 4-of-17 effort from behind the arc for 24 percent. The hosts were also 12-of-15 at the charity stripe for 80 percent.
Destiny Tabler paced Fed Hock with 23 points, followed by Jordan Gillian, Miranda Scott and Skylar Hatfield with four markers apiece. Hannah Dunfee was next with three points, while Gracie Beha, Audrey Blake, Faith Bennett-Wolfe and Brittnie Jackson with two markers each.
Beha did haul in a game-high 12 rebounds for the hosts in the setback.
