RACINE, Ohio — A fast start can be just what you need.
The South Gallia boys basketball team scored 26 points in the first eight minutes of the Rebels’ 65-50 victory over Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Southern, Friday night in Racine.
The Rebels (4-1, 2-1 TVC Hocking) led 26-to-10 after the opening period and their lead was expanded to 36-18 at halftime.
Southern (0-4, 0-3) posted 22 points in the third period, cutting the deficit to 50-40 with eight minutes remaining. South Gallia only sank half of its 22 free throw attempts in the fourth period, but it was enough to secure the 65-50 victory.
Joseph Ehman led the Rebel scoring with 24 points, followed by Landon Hutchinson with 13. Josh Henry and Curtis Haner each had seven points, Kane Hutchinson added five, while D.J. Drenner finished with four. Caleb Henry posted three points in the triumph, while Austin Triplett and Dominick Johnson rounded out the SGHS scoring with one point each.
South Gallia shot 17-of-33 (51.5 percent) from the free throw line, while committing 14 turnovers. The Red and Gold pulled down 34 rebounds in the win, including 10 on the offensive end.
Crenson Rogers led the Tornadoes with 14 points, followed by Kody Greene with nine and Blake Johnson with eight. Clayton Wood scored seven points, Trey Pickens and Dylan Smith each added four, while Eli Hunter and Jonah Hoback both finished with two points.
Rogers and Smith led Southern on the glass with seven rebounds each, followed by Johnson and Pickens with five each. Pickens, Rogers and Smith each had two assists to lead the Purple and Gold, while the defense was charged by Pickens, Rogers, Smith and Wood with two steals each.
Southern shot 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the free throw line and 17-of-44 (38.6 percent) from the field, including 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from beyond the arc. As a team SHS had 17 defensive rebounds, 14 offensive rebounds, seven assists, nine steals and 27 turnovers.
The Tornadoes will look for revenge on January 22, when they travel to Mercerville. SHS returns to action on Tuesday at Wahama, while South Gallia hosts unbeaten Waterford on Tuesday.
