GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — A rough way to go out.
The Ohio Valley Christian soccer team had its 2015 regular season come to an unfortunate end Thursday night following a 3-1 setback to visiting Grace Christian Academy in a non-conference match in the Old French City.
The Defenders (3-8-2) never led in their final regular season home match, but the hosts did manage to keep things interesting in the opening 50 minutes as both programs entered the intermission deadlocked at zero.
The Soldiers, however, broke into the scoring column during the 51st minute as Isaac Perry netted a pass from Lucas Dongion for a 1-0 advantage. Perry followed with an unassisted goal in the 64th minute for a 2-0 GCA edge.
The Defenders closed to within a goal in the 69th minute as Justin Sizemore netted a pass from Justin Beaver for a 2-1 contest.
Perry, however, recorded a hat trick in the 71st minute after netting a pass from Noah Lambert — which wrapped up the 3-1 outcome.
Both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first match-up in Huntington back on August 25. Both squads also had 21 shots apiece in the second contest, with GCA also claiming a 10-1 edge in corner kicks in the rematch.
Marshall Hood made 13 saves in net for OVCS, while Chris Harmony stopped 10 shots in goal for Grace Christian.
The Defenders open OCSAA tournament play on Saturday, Oct. 24, when they host Crista Rey in a Southeast Regional semifinal at 4 p.m.
