RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Hannah Joly had a match-high 12 kills and 21 digs, while Monica Loftus had 12 kills and 10 digs of her own in leading Indiana University-Southeast to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-22) win over the University of Rio Grande, Friday night, in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball action at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The Grenadiers, who were playing the second of four matches in a three-day span, improved to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Rio Grande, which had a five-match win streak snapped, slipped to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the KIAC.
The RedStorm led 19-17 late in the opening set, but IU-S closed the set on an 8-4 run – including the final two points – to take the early match lead.
The Grenadiers led just 6-5 early in set two, but used a 16-4 run to blow things open and cruise to the win.
IU-Southeast snapped a 12-12 tie in set three with a 5-1 scoring spurt and Rio never got any closer than two points of a tie the rest of the way.
The Grenadiers, who finished with just 10 attack errors and a .287 hitting percentage, also got a match-high 40 assists from Hannah Barker and Caitlynn Pfaadt added 14 digs and two service aces.
Junior Kayla Briley (Marion, OH) led Rio Grande with 34 assists, while sophomores Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) and Madison Wilson (Groveport, OH) had 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior Chandler Brown (Stockdale, OH) added 21 digs and freshman Brooke Bostelman (Kenton, OH) finished with 11 digs.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Barbourville, Ky. for a tri-match hosted by Union College. The RedStorm will meet the host Bulldogs at 3 p.m. after a 1 p.m. opener against Truett-McConnell (Ga.) College.
