RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The University of Rio Grande grabbed a lead midway through the first half and then survived an onslaught of second half scoring chances by visiting Ohio Christian University for a 1-0 win over the Trailblazers, Thursday night, in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm, who stopped a three-game losing streak with the victory, improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the KIAC.
The Trailblazers, who are in their first season as a member of both the NAIA and the KIAC, slipped to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Rio Grande scored what proved to be the game’s only marker when senior Melissa Dickerson (Little Hocking, OH) blasted a penalty kick past OCU net-minder Mekayla Deffenbaugh with 24:59 remaining in the first half.
Ohio Christian had plenty of scoring opportunities, though, but failed to score against Rio sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Garn (Morrow, OH), who finished with a career-high 14 saves.
The Trailblazers finished with a 21-13 edge in shots, including a 14-4 advantage in the second half. Nine of the 14 second half were on target.
Deffenbaugh had six saves in the loss for OCU.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday, traveling to former Mid-Ohio Conference and America Mideast Conference rival Cedarville University for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
