Blue Devils rally past Pointers, 2-1

CENTENARY, Ohio — Justin Day made it a winning night for the Gallia Academy High School soccer squad.

That’s because the junior forward Day scored both of the Blue Devils’ goals, and spearheaded their 2-1 come-from-behind victory over visiting South Point on Thursday night at Gallia Academy High School’s Lester Field.

The Pointers posted their only marker midway through the opening half, but Day delivered twice in the first 15 minutes and 45 seconds of the second — including on an equalizing penalty kick less than two minutes in.

Despite being outshot 8-3, the Blue Devils did hang on for the Ohio Valley Conference win — their first triumph of the entire season and the first career coaching victory for first-year mentor Cory Camden.

Gallia Academy is now 1-3-1, and an even 1-1-1 in the five-team OVC.

The Pointers, which shared the OVC championship with the Blue and White last season, slipped to 0-2-1 in the league.

The Blue Devils, which tied Fairland 2-2 in the conference and season opener, snapped a three-game losing streak — which included a 7-1 league rolling by Rock Hill on Aug. 31.

For Day, he has now scored five of Gallia Academy’s six goals, which also includes the two against Fairland and lone goal against Jackson.

Ian Hill had the Blue Devils’ tally against Rock Hill.

Against South Point, Day tied the match at 1-1 just a minute and 52 seconds into the second half on his penalty kick.

His go-ahead goal, and ultimately the game winner, came with 24:15 remaining.

In fact, Day had all three of Gallia Academy’s shots — as his other attempt came just 30 seconds before his second goal.

Drew Smith shot four times to pace South Point, as GAHS goalkeeper Andrew Toler made his only save on a Smith attempt with 33 minutes to play.

Tyler Lilly, who shot twice, scored the sole South Point point at the 21:37 mark of the first half.

Jacob McClure, with three-and-a-half minutes left in the first, and Matt Allen — at the 35:24 juncture of the second — amounted the other Pointer shots.

Gallia Academy also added a corner kick.

The Blue Devils return to OVC action on Tuesday — when they complete the first half of conference play at Chesapeake.
