MOBILE, Ala. — The University of Mobile made the most of its scant scoring opportunities, scoring goals on two of its three shots on goal, and upending No. 2-ranked University of Rio Grande, 2-0, Saturday afternoon, in non-conference men’s soccer action at The Jungle.
The Rams improved to 2-0 with their second straight win over a ranked foe. They began the season on Aug. 25 with a 2-1 win over No. 19 John Brown University.
Rio Grande slipped to 2-1 with the loss.
The RedStorm had a 12-game regular season unbeaten streak snapped. The program’s last regular season loss came on Sept. 17, 2016 in a 2-0 decision at the University of Northwestern Ohio. That loss also marked the last time Rio was shutout in a regular season contest.
The RedStorm enjoyed a 16-8 advantage in shots overall, although both teams had just three shots on frame.
Nathan Gillespie scored an unassisted marker in the game’s early minutes to give Mobile an early lead, while Casey Culver scored off an assist from Newton Henry with 15:58 remaining to set the final score.
Guilherme Altoe had three saves in goal for the host Rams.
Freshman net-minder Luis Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) had one save in a losing cause for the RedStorm.
Rio Grande returns to action next Saturday, traveling to Indiana Wesleyan University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
