MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Willian Paulino scored his team-high eighth goal of the season and the University of Rio Grande limited host Mount Vernon Nazarene University to just one shot on goal in a 4-0 win over the Cougars, Wednesday afternoon, at Cougar Field.
Rio Grande, which moved into the top spot of the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 on Tuesday, improved to 9-0 with the win.
Mount Vernon, a rival of Rio’s when both were members of the now-defunct America Mideast Conference, slipped to 4-3-2.
Sophomore Jorge Guinovart (Barcelona, Spain) gave the RedStorm a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season – a rocket shot past MVNU net-minder Adam Miller – just under 18 minutes into the match.
Paulino, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, extended the lead to 2-0 on his goal with 17:56 remaining in the first half.
That’s how things stayed until junior Heitor de Melo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) headed in a corner kick by junior teammate Jeremy de Hoog (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) just under eight minutes into the second stanza, before redshirt freshman Spencer Reinford (McAlisterville, PA) scored his first collegiate goal off an assist by sophomore Isaiah Chapman (Cincinnati, OH) with just over one minute left to set the final score.
Rio finished with a 18-6 edge in shots, including 10-1 in shots on goal.
Freshman goalie Ben Martinez (Montpellier, France) had one save and earned his fifth shutout of the season.
Miller had six saves in a losing cause for the Cougars.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday night when former Mid-South Conference rival – and No. 6-ranked – Lindsey Wilson College visits Evan E. Davis Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Randy Payton is the Sports Information Director at the University of Rio Grande.
