Rio women outlast Tigers in 2OT

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Freshman Payten Davis made the first goal of her collegiate career a memorable one, netting an unassisted marker just over two minutes into the second overtime period and lifting the University of Rio Grande to a 2-1 win over host Campbellsville University on Tuesday night at Citizen’s Bank Field.

The RedStorm improved to 1-1 with the victory — its first in seven all-time meetings with the Tigers.

Campbellsville slipped to 0-2 with the loss.

Davis, a forward from Chillicothe, Ohio, gathered in a loose ball near midfield and darted down the left sideline before making a cut toward the goal and pushing a shot past Campbellsville senior goal keeper Amanda Howard — a second team NAIA All-American selection last season — 2:24 into the period for the game-winner.

“Tonight was a good fight by the girls. We’re young, but we’re starting to mesh,” said Rio Grande head coach Tony Daniels. “It was a big win that was the product of what we preach on a day-in, day-out basis — positive energy from all the ladies. I’m proud of their fortitude to see the game through to the end.”

Campbellsville grabbed a 1-0 lead just under 20 minutes into the contest on an unassisted marker by Rachel Blumfeldt — a shot which hit the right post and then trickled backwards and across the goal line before Rio junior keeper Andrea Vera could retreat and knock the ball away.

The RedStorm knotted the score at 1-1 on goal by freshman Chase Davis — the cousin of Payten Davis — with 11:09 left in the first half thanks to an assist by sophomore Jenna Porter.

Campbellsville finished with a 22-16 edge in shots, including 11-10 in shots on goal.

Vera went the distance in net for Rio and finished with 10 saves, seven of which came in the opening half.

Howard had eight saves in the loss for the Tigers, seven of which came in the second half and the two overtime sessions.

Rio Grande returns to action on Sept. 7 when it travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
