Point runners compete at Ripley


RIPLEY, W.Va. — He didn’t use the force, he was the force.

Point Pleasant junior Luke Wilson came away with top individual honors on Saturday after winning the boys competition at the 2017 Ripley Covered Bridge cross country meet held in Jackson County.

Wilson — who shattered his own school record by almost 35 seconds — finished just over 11 seconds ahead of the entire 57-man field with a winning mark of 17:15.94. Bryce Jarrell of Ravenswood was the overall runner-up in the boys race with a time of 17:27.06.

Wilson’s record-setting effort was also only one of four times recorded under the 19-minute mark during the boys competition.

Overall, the Black Knights finished fifth out of seven scoring teams with a final tally of 119 points. Ravenswood won the boys team title with 60 points, while Clay County (69), Capital (75) and Ripley (83) rounded out the top four spots.

Isaac Daniels followed Wilson for PPHS by placing 30th overall with a time of 22:11.91, while Ethan Scott was 32nd with a mark of 22:18.34.

Tanner Durst was next with a 39th place time of 23:46.88 and Alex Foster was 57th overall with a mark of 38:09.04.

PPHS had only one female entered the 40-person girls competition as Allison Henderson placed sixth overall with a time of 23:11.46.

Victoria Starcher of Ripley won the girls race with a time of 18:34.92. Emer Carrington of Sissonville was the overall runner-up with a mark of 21:39.65.

Ripley won the girls title with 17 points, with Capital (59) and Clay County (60) rounding out the remaining two team tallies.
