Blue Angels sweep Fairland in season opener


PROCTORVILLE, Ohio — Off on the right foot.

The Gallia Academy volleyball team kicked off its 2017 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Ohio Valley Conference host Fairland, on Thursday in Lawrence County.

The Blue Angels (1-0, 1-0 OVC), who haven’t dropped a single game in league play since 2015, trailed early in Thursday’s opening game. Once Gallia Academy took the lead at 12-11, it never trailed again, rolling to the 25-18 win.

The Blue Angels fought through three ties, before breaking the second game open with a 12-2 run, eventually winning the second by a 25-14 final.

Trailing 5-3 in the third game, GAHS reeled off 11 straight points and never trailed again, taking the 25-18 win to cap off the 3-0 sweep.

GAHS junior Ashton Webb led the Blue and White with 16 service points. Alex Barnes was next with nine points and two aces, followed by Ryelee Sipple with seven points and three aces. Grace Martin, Peri Martin and Hunter Copley each posted four points, with the Martin sisters each recording an ace. Katie Carpenter rounded out the GAHS service attack with one point in the triumph.

Webb also led Gallia Academy at the net, posting 15 kills and one block. Maddie Wright had six kills in the win, Barnes added four, and Copley chipped in with three kills. Peri Martin and Aubrey Unroe each had two kills, with Martin marking a team-high 22 assists in the win.

Copley led the Blue Angel defense with nine digs, followed by Barnes and Peri Martin with seven apiece.

The Lady Dragons were led by Kelsie Warnock with six service points. Next was Emily Chapman with five points, followed by Bailey Roland with four and Sydney Waters with three. Jenna Stone had two service points in the setback, while Marikate Polcyn added one.

Gallia Academy will look to sweep Fairland on September 21, when these teams meet in Centenary. GAHS continues OVC play on Tuesday, when the Blue Angels host Rock Hill for their home opener.
