ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio — Junior quarterback Cody Bartrum threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns, and the duo of Kaileb Sheets and Colton Lilly both had 100 yards in receiving as the Meigs Marauders overcame a sluggish performance to defeat the Vinton County Vikings Friday night at Holzer Field/Farmers Bank Stadium.
Bartrum completed 17-of-35 in the air as he eclipsed the 300-yard passing mark for the second time in four games, his statistics could have been better as he had at least four passes dropped. The Marauders were coming in off two emotional games in a row and it showed at times against the Vikings.
Meigs (3-1, 1-0 TVC Ohio) scored their first touchdown with 3:42 left in the first period when Bartrum scored from a yard out, that play capped a 10-play, 66-yard drive.
In the second period it took the Marauders just two plays to score after a Viking punt. On second down, Bartrum hooked up with Sheets on the far sideline. Sheets side-stepped a Viking defender and went untouched 42 yards for the score with 8:14 left in the period.
Meigs increased the lead to 18-0 at the half after driving 59 yards in just five plays. The final 10 yards came on Bartrum’s second touchdown toss to Sheets, but the Marauders to convert the extra points for a third time.
Meigs took a short kick to start the second half at its own 49. Five plays later, Trae Hood plowed in from five yards out with 10:54 in the third period to increase the lead to 24-0. The big play in the drive was a 39-yard keeper by Bartrum on second-and-10 to the Viking 12.
Meigs closed out the scoring with 8:10 to go when Bartrum hit Lilly from 23 yards out. Hood had a 28-yard dash to set up the score. Bailey Caruthers added the extra points and the Marauders were on top 31-0.
Two other times in the contest the Marauders were inside the Viking 15, but failed to score.
“A win is a win,” Marauder coach Mike Bartrum said after the contest. “We played hard, but we need to play at an upper level and be consistent. Vinton County played hard and gave us everything they had, we need to cherish the win and get ready for a tough River Valley team.”
Bartrum was 17-of-35 for 303 yards and two scores. He also carried three times for 48 yards. Sheets pulled in seven for 108 yards and a pair of scores, while Lilly added four for 101 and a score.
Caruthers added five catches for 73 and Jared Kennedy one for 21. Hood carried 10 times for 62 yards for Meigs. Zach Helton added three for 32 and Lane Cullums two for 18.
Tim Ousley, the Vikings big 6-1, 240 pound bowling ball running back, ran 19 times for 99 yards. Kelton Collins added 11 carries for 25 and Caleb Montgomery seven for 24. Naylan Yates was 2-of-12 in the air for 19 yards, while Nick Trainer caught one for 11 and Ousley one for 8.
The Marauders will now turn their attention to the undefeated River Valley Raiders in Bidwell next Friday.
