PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — This is becoming old hat for Gallia Academy’s Pierce Wilcoxon.

That’s because Wilcoxon, for the third consecutive season, was part of the championship doubles team at the Division II sectional tennis tournament — held on Monday and Wednesday at Portsmouth High School.

This time, the junior Wilcoxon will be joined by fellow junior Miguel Velasco, as the Blue Devil duo captured all five of its matches as part of the sectional event.

And, as part of those 5-for-5 contests, Wilcoxon and Velasco lost only one game in their 10 total sets, which was in the finals against the combination from Portsmouth Clay.

Prior to playing Portsmouth Clay for the sectional championship, the pair blanked the tandems from Hillsboro, Waverly, Washington Court House and Miami Trace.

As a result of winning the Southeast District sectional, Velasco and Wilcoxon will be the top seed in the Division II Southeast-East district tournament — which is set for Saturday, May 20 at Ohio University.

They will also have a first-round bye at the district.

Wilcoxon, for the past two years, won the sectional doubles title and automatically qualified for the Division II district meet with his sister Adriana.

In fact, the Wilcoxons qualified for the state tennis tournament last year.

Like he has in his first two seasons at Gallia Academy, Pierce played in singles competition prior to tournament play.

He was the Blue Devils’ second singles player, while Velasco — a first-year GAHS student-athlete — starred at first singles.

The district meet features four sectional winners from the East District and eight sectional winners from the Southeast District.

No other Gallia Academy member advanced out of the sectional competition.

As an entire team, the Blue Devils had three non-league matches get cancelled and not re-scheduled — at Ironton and home duels against Marietta and Portsmouth Notre Dame.

Gallia Academy ends its regular season, and Southeastern Ohio Athletic League action, on Monday when it hosts Jackson.

A Blue Devil defeat of the Ironmen means a three-way share for the final SEOAL championship between the Blue Devils, Jackson and Logan.
